ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡ.
ಅಥ ಏಕೋನಪಂಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ||

ತತಃ ಸ ಕರ್ಮಣಾ ತಸ್ಯ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತೋ ಭೀಮವಿಕ್ರಮಃ|
ಹನುಮಾನ್ರೋಷತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ರಕ್ಷೋಽಧಿಪಮವೈಕ್ಷತ||1||

ಸ|| ತತಃ ಸಃ ಭೀಮವಿಕ್ರಮಃ ಹನುಮಾನ್ ರೋಷತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ ತಸ್ಯ ಕರ್ಮಣಾ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತಃ ರಕ್ಷೋಧಿಪಂ ಅವೈಕ್ಷತ||

Then Hanuman who is of fierce valor, astonished by their actions, looked at the king of Rakshasas with eyes red with anger.

ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಂ ಮಹಾರ್ಹೇಣ ಕಾಂಚನೇನ ವಿರಾಜತಾ|
ಮುಕ್ತಜಾಲಾವೃತೇ ನಾಥ ಮಕುಟೇನ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಮ್||2||
ವಜ್ರಸಂಯೋಗಸಂಯುಕ್ತೈ ರ್ಮಹರ್ಹಮಣಿವಿಗ್ರಹೈಃ|
ಹೈಮೈ ರಾಭರಣೈಶ್ಚಿತ್ರೈ ರ್ಮನಸೇವ ಪ್ರಕಲ್ಪಿತೈಃ||3||
ಮಹರ್ಹಕ್ಷೌಮಸಂವೀತಂ ರಕ್ತಚಂದನರೂಷಿತಂ|
ಸ್ವನುಲಿಪ್ತಂ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಾಭಿರ್ವಿವಿಧಾಭಿಶ್ಚ ಭಕ್ತಿಭಿಃ||4||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾರ್ಹೇನ ಕಾಂಚನೇನ ವಿರಾಜಿತಾ ಅಥ ಮುಕ್ತಾಜಾಲವೃತೇನಮುಕುಟೇನ ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಂ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಮ್||ವಜ್ರಸಂಯೋಗ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತೈಃ ಮಹಾರ್ಹಮಣಿವಿಗ್ರಹೈಃ ಮನಸಾ ಪ್ರಕಲ್ಪಿತೈರಿವ ಚಿತ್ರೈಃ ಹೇಮೈಃ ಆಭರಣೈಃ ||ಮಹಾರ್ಹಕ್ಷೌಮ ಸಂವೀತಂ ರಕ್ತಚಂದನ ರೂಷಿತಂ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಾಭಿಃ ವಿವಿಧಾಬಿಶ್ಚ ಭಕ್ತಿಭಿಃ ಸ್ವಾನುಲಿಪ್ತಂ ||

(the Rakshasa king was ) Of innate splendor, shining with a golden crown covered with glittering strings of pearls. ( He was decked with) with golden ornaments studded with diamonds, adorned with small motifs of precious gems as though designed with imagination. ( He was) Dressed in exquisite silk with many kinds of wonderful ornamental designs , smeared with red sandal paste , smeared with unguents.

ವಿವೃತೈರ್ದರ್ಶನೀಯೈಶ್ಚ ರಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷೈರ್ಭೀಮದರ್ಶನೈಃ|
ದೀಪ್ತ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಮಹಾದಂಷ್ಟ್ರೈಃ ಪ್ರಲಂಬದಶನಚ್ಛದೈಃ||5||
ಶಿರೋಭಿರ್ದಶಭಿರ್ವೀರಂ ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಂ ಮಹೌಜಸಂ|
ನಾನಾವ್ಯಾಳಸಮಾಕೀರ್ಣೈಃ ಶಿಖರೈರಿವ ಮಂದರಮ್||6||

ಸ|| ದರ್ಶನೀಯೈಃ ರಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷೈಃ ಭೀಮದರ್ಶನೈಃ ದೀಪ್ತತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಮಹಾದಂಷ್ಟ್ರೈಃ ಪ್ರಲಂಬದಸನಚ್ಛದೈಃ ದಶಭಿಃ ಶಿರೋಭಿಃ ವಿಚಿತ್ರೈಃ ನನಾವ್ಯಾಲಸಮಾಕೀರ್ಣೈಃ ಶಿಖರೈಃ ಮಂದರಂ ಇವ ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಂ ಮಹೌಜಸಂ ವೀರಂ (ದದರ್ಶ)||

Heroic powerful and splendid, (he) appeared with blood red eyes, with fearsome looks, with shining sharp teeth with drooping lips, with ten heads, which looked like the peaks of Mandara mountain with different kinds of beasts.

ನೀಲಾಂಜನಚಯಪ್ರಖ್ಯಂ ಹಾರೇಣೋರಸಿ ರಾಜತಾ|
ಪೂರ್ಣ ಚಂದ್ರಾಭವಕ್ತ್ರೇನ ಸಬಲಾಕಮಿವಾಂಬುದಮ್||7||
ಬಾಹುಭಿರ್ಬದ್ಧಕೇಯೂರೈಃ ಚಂದನೋತ್ತಮರೂಷಿತೈಃ|
ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಾಂಗದೈಃ ಪೀನೈಃ ಪಂಚಶೀರ್ಷೈರಿವೋರಗೈಃ||8||

ಸ||ನೀಲಾಂಜನಚಯಪ್ರಖ್ಯಂ ಉರಸಿ ರಾಜತಾ ಹಾರೇಣ ಪೂರ್ಣಚಂದ್ರಾಭವ ವಕ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಬಲಾಕಂ ಅಂಬುದಂ ಇವ ||ಬದ್ಧಕೇಯೂರೈಃ ಚಂದನೋತ್ತಮರುಷಿತೈಃ ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಾಂಗದೈಃ ಪೀನೈಃ ಪಂಚಶೀರ್ಷೈಃ ಉರಗೈರಿವ ಬಹುಭಿಃ ||

Like a black mountain of collyrium with a face like that of full moon, illuminated by the necklace on the chest which looked like cranes around a cloud. Smeared with best sandal paste , wearing armlets and shining bracelets, the stout arms looked like five headed serpents.

ಮಹತಿ ಸ್ಫಾಟಿಕೇ ಚಿತ್ರೇ ರತ್ನಸಂಯೋಗಸಂಸ್ಕೃತೇ|
ಉತ್ತಮಾಸ್ತರಣಾಸ್ತೀರ್ಣೇ ಸೂಪವಿಷ್ಟಂ ವರಾನನೇ||9||
ಅಲಂಕೃತಾಭಿರತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರಮದಾಭಿಃ ಸಮಂತತಃ|
ವಾಲವ್ಯಜನಹಸ್ತಾಭಿ ರರಾತ್ಸಮುಪಸೇವಿತಮ್||10||

ಸ|| ರತ್ನಸಂಯೋಗ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತೇ ಚಿತ್ರೇ ಉತ್ತಮಾಸ್ತರಣಾಸ್ತೀರ್ಣೇ ಶ್ಫಾಟಿಕೇ ಮಹತಿ ವರಾಸನೇ ಸೂಪವಿಷ್ಟಂ ||ಅತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಅಲಂಕೃತಾಭಿಃ ವ್ಯಾಲವ್ಯಜನಹಸ್ತಾಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಮದಾಭಿಃ ಸಮಂತತಃ ಆರಾತ್ ಸಮುಪಸೇವಿತಂ||

( He was ) well seated on a huge magnificent throne of crystal encrusted with precious stones, which is on a beautiful carpet. Beautiful girls exceedingly well decorated ones , holding whisks in their hands in the vicinity, attended on him.

ದುರ್ಧರೇಣ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತೇನ ಮಹಾಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇನ ರಕ್ಷಸಾ|
ಮಂತ್ರಿಭಿರ್ಮಂತ್ರತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞೈ ರ್ನಿಕುಂಭೇನ ಚ ಮಂತ್ರಿಣಾ||11||
ಸುಖೋಪವಿಷ್ಟಂ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿಃ ಚತುರ್ಭಿಃ ಬಲದರ್ಪಿತೈಃ|
ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಃ ಪರಿವೃತೋಲೋಕಃ ಚತುರ್ಭಿರಿವಸಾಗರೈಃ||12||
ಮಂತ್ರಿಭಿರ್ಮಂತ್ರತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞೈ ರನ್ಯೈಶ್ಚ ಶುಭಬುದ್ಧಿಭಿಃ|
ಅನ್ವಾಸ್ಯಮಾನಂ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿಃ ಸುರೈರಿವ ಸುರೇಶ್ವರಮ್||13||

ಸ|| ದುರ್ಧರೇಣ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತೇನ ರಕ್ಷಸಾ ಮಹಾಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇನ ಮಂತ್ರಿಣಾ ನಿಕುಂಭೇನ ಮಂತ್ರತತ್ವಜ್ಞೈಃ ಮಂತ್ರಿಭಿಃ ಬಲದರ್ಪಿತೈಃ ಚತುರ್ಭಿಃ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿಃ ಸುಖೋಪವಿಷ್ಟಂ ಚತುರ್ಭಿಃ ಸಾಗರೈಃ ಪರಿವೃತಂ ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಂ ಲೋಕಮ್ ಇವ||ಮಂತ್ರ ತತ್ವಜ್ಞೈಃ ಶುಭಬಂಧುಭಿಃ ಮಂತ್ರಿಭಿಃ ಅನ್ಯೈಃ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿಃ ಸುರೈಃ ಸುರೇಶ್ವರಂ ಇವ ಅನ್ವಾಸ್ಯಮಾನಂ ||

He was attended by Rakshasas Durdhara Prahasta Mahaparsva Nikumbha, who are the ministers and learned ones. Attended by the four arrogant Rakshasas and comfortably seated he looked like the entire world surrounded by four oceans. Attended by learned ones, intellectuals ministers and other Rakshasas, he was like Indra attended by the gods.

ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ ರಾಕ್ಷಪತಿಂ ಹನುಮಾನತಿತೇಜಸಂ|
ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಂ ಮೇರುಶಿಖರೇ ಸತೋಯಮಿವ ತೋಯದಮ್||14||

ಸ|| ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಅತಿತೇಜಸಂ ಮೇರುಶಿಖರೇ ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಂ ಸತೋಯಂ ತೋಯದಂ ಇವ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಪತಿಂ ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ ||

Hanuman saw the highly splendid, Rakshasa king who appeared like clouds laden with water on the peaks of Meru mountain.

ಸತೈಸಂಪೀಡ್ಯಮಾನೋಽಪಿ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿರ್ಭೀಮವಿಕ್ರಮೈಃ|
ವಿಸ್ಮಯಂ ಪರಮಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ರಕ್ಷೋಽಧಿಪಮವೈಕ್ಷತ||15||
ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಂ ತತೋ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಹನುಮಾನ್ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರಮ್|
ಮನಸಾ ಚಿಂತಯಾಮಾಸ ತೇಜಸಾ ತಸ್ಯ ಮೋಹಿತಾ||16||

ಸ|| ಸಃ ಭೀಮವಿಕ್ರಮೈಃ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿಃ ಸಂಪೀಡ್ಯಮಾನೋಪಿ ಪರಮಂ ವಿಸ್ಮಯಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ರಕ್ಷೋಧಿಪಂ ಅವೈಕ್ಷತ|| ತತಃ ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಭ್ರಾಜಮಾನಂ ತಸ್ಯ ತೇಜಸಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಸ್ಯ ತೇಜಸಾ ಮೋಹಿತಃ ಮನಸಾ ಚಿಂತಯಾಮಾಸ||

Though being troubled by the fearsome Rakshasas he ( Hanuman) looked at the Rakshasa king in amazement. Then Hanuman looking at the shining king of Rakshasas , attracted by his splendor, started thinking in his mind.

ಅಹೋ ರೂಪ ಮಹೋಧೈರ್ಯ ಮಹೋಸತ್ತ್ವ ಮಹೋದ್ಯುತಿಃ|
ಅಹೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಲಕ್ಷಣ ಯುಕ್ತತಾ||17||
ಯದ್ಯಧರ್ಮೋ ನ ಬಲವಾನ್ ಸ್ಯಾದಯಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರಃ|
ಸ್ಯಾ ದಯಂ ಸುರಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಸಶಕ್ರಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ||18||

ಸ||| ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜಸ್ಯ ರೂಪಂ ಅಹೋ| ಧೈರ್ಯಂ ಅಹೋ| ಸತ್ತ್ವಂ ಅಹೋ| ದ್ಯುತಿಃ ಅಹೋ| ಸರ್ವಲಕ್ಷಣಯುಕ್ತತಾ ಅಹೋ||ಅಯಂ ಅಧರ್ಮಃ ಬಲವಾನ್ ನ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಯದಿ ಅಯಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರಃ ಸಶಕ್ರಸ್ಯ ಸುರಲೋಕಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ||

' Oh What form . What courage . What power. What glow. He is endowed with all merits. If he is not unrighteous, the Rakshasa king could have been the lord of even the world of gods including Indra'.

ಅಸ್ಯ ಕ್ರೂರೈರ್ನೃಶಂಸೈಶ್ಚ ಕರ್ಮಭಿರ್ಲೋಕಕುತ್ಸಿತೈಃ|
ಸರ್ವೇ ಬಿಭ್ಯತಿ ಖಲ್ವಸ್ಮಾಲ್ಲೋಕಾಃ ಸಾಮರದಾನವಾಃ||19||
ಅಯಂ ಹ್ಯುತ್ಸಹತೇ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ ಕರ್ತುಮೇಕಾರ್ಣವಂ ಜಗತ್|

ಸ|| ಕ್ರೂರೈಃ ನೃಶಂಸೈಶ್ಚ ಲೋಕಕುತ್ಸಿತೈಃ ಅಸ್ಯಕರ್ಮಭಿಃ ಸಾಮರದಾನವಾಃ ಸರ್ವೇ ಲೋಕಾಃ ಅಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಬಿಭ್ಯತಿ ಹಿ| ಅಯಂ ಕೃದ್ಧಃ ಜಗತ್ ಏಕಾರ್ಣವಮ್ ಕರ್ತುಂ ಉತ್ಸಹತೇ ಹಿ |

With his contemptible wicked deeds, all people even the gods and demons are scared of this person. If he is angry he is capable of making the entire world into ocean.

ಇತಿಚಿಂತಾಂ ಬಹುವಿಧಾ ಮಕರೋನ್ಮತಿಮಾನ್ ಕಪಿಃ||
ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವಮಮಿತೌಜಸಃ||20||

ಸ|| ಅಮಿತೌಜಸಃ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಮತಿಮಾನ್ ಹರಿಃ ಇತಿ ಬಹುವಿಧಾಂ ಚಿಂತಾಂ ಅಕರೋತ್||

Thus seeing the power of the brilliant king of Rakshasas intelligent Hanuman entertained many thoughts.

ಚತುರ್ವಿಂಶತ್ ಸಹಸ್ರಿಕಾಯಾಂ ಸಂಹಿತಾಯಾಮ್
ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡೇ ಏಕೋನಪಂಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||

Thus ends Sarga forty nine of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
